INTENSIVE COURSE

picture of a TX1 taxi

In addition to our Evening Classes and Correspondence Courses, I have been running an Intensive Course since 1992.

The Intensive Course provides concentrated tuition for potential taxi drivers within the City of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Airport. The pupils are expected to study this in conjunction with the Evening Classes, and also latterly, the Assessment Sessions.

This course involves taking students out during the day and physically driving around the areas which have been studied in a previous evening class lesson. Hotels, hospitals, golf courses, consulates, high rise flats, places of interest etc. etc. are all covered in additional sessions.

Towards the end of this course we tend to concentrate on routes. Guidance on route planning techniques are taught, and practiced on a practical basis. This part of the course has proved very popular.

Pupils attend our evening class sessions twice per week over a six week period, or once per week over twelve weeks. At each of these lessons the student will study a predetermined section of the city, examining the various housing areas, streets and any other relevant information a taxi driver would be expected to know. Progress tests are issued throughout, and these should highlight any aspects of the syllabus which may be in need of further clarification. This method allows the pupil to obtain a firm grasp of each section of the city, before proceeding to the next area.

In addition to the evening classes, Intensive Course students can expect to receive approximately 30 daytime private sessions, lasting in the region of 3 hours each. Generally speaking, pupils have 2 to 3 lessons per week (depending on the preferences, and capability of the individual). During these sessions, which are usually undertaken on a one to one basis, the pupil is physically driven around all of the places which have been studied in a previous evening class lesson. Additionally, in the later sessions, guidance on route planning techniques are taught, and practiced, on both a written and practical basis.
Pupils also attend classroom assessment sessions where full mock tests are tackled under exam conditions. These tests are similar in content to the actual test which is set by the Cab Office. From the results of these test papers, we are able to pinpoint any aspects of the course which require further instruction and clarification. Consequently, this part of the course is modelled around the needs of the individual. Subject matter will obviously vary, and can be studied in much greater detail than could possibly be accomplished purely by attendance at the evening classes.
We have been running the Intensive Course since 1992, and to date all pupils who have completed the course, and sat the Cab Office Test, have been successful. Consequently we are very confident that the Intensive Course provides a cost effective and very efficient method of obtaining the coveted City of Edinburgh Taxi Driver's Licence in a relatively short period of time.
